The Sweet Chestnut is a beautiful big tree that provides edible chestnuts in autumn, perfect over a fire at Christmas time! Before the Chestnuts are hanging catkins in summer, followed by the spikey, round yellow/green casings that protect the sweet chestnuts inside. If the wildlife doesn't get to these little gems first, they're ideal for hunting around on the ground for and roasting on the fire. In autumn its long, serrated leaves turn shades of yellows and oranges before falling to the ground, hiding all of its chestnuts!
The tree has a rounded habit, growing eventually to around 30m in height and spread.

The Sweet Chestnut will grow in most conditions but doesn't do well in heavy clay soils or heavy lime soils, so a lighter soil, neutral-acidic is much more ideal. It can often be seen in parkland or spaced woodland and would be well suited to a large gaden or open park.
