Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) is a native shrub and is one of the main components of a decidous mixed hedge, it can also be used on its own or with Thorn (Crataegus monogyna). Its white flowers open in March and are followed by purple to black berries (Sloes) in Autumn. Blackthorn provides a valuable source of nectar and pollen for pollinating insects in spring, because it flowers so early, making them a vital lifeline. Caterpillars and moths feed on its foliage and birds often nest in the dense thickets. It prefers a sunny position and will tolerate most soils except those that are waterlogged.
