Crataegus monogyna. Known as Hawthorn, Quickthorn and Whitethorn is a fast growing, thorny, native,  deciduous hedging plant, tolerant of wet soils, with dark glossy green leaves. In May, clusters of prominent, white, scented flowers burst out, followed by glossy red haws in autumn, which sustain native bird life. The Hawthorn leaves are bright green and tinged with red and make attractive deciduous hedges full of autumn colour. Quickthorn makes an excellent hedge with a long season of interest, or it can be grown as a specimen tree where it can reach a height of 8 to 15m, it is very hardy and is useful in coastal or exposed positions.
