'John Downie' is the most favoured variety to grow to produce Crab Apple Jelly due to the size and flavour of the fruits. In spring pink buds open to white flowers and are particularly popular with bees. Then it produces a mass of plum-shaped, large fruits that are red and yellow nad mature very early but keep well into winter. Ffiery leaf shades of yellow, bronze and orange can be seen in autumn, adding to the year round interest. Forms a slightly arching shape as it matures and will grow up to 5m high by 3m wide. Will tolerate most conditions, avoiding very wet.
