Wild cherry (Prunus Avium) is a native, deciduous Cherry growing to about 12m. It has white blossom in Spring, at the same time as the new leaves come out. In Autumn the leaves turn orange-pink & red before falling. 'Avium' in the Latin name refers to birds which eat the cherries as soon as they are ripe (the cherries are very bitter so not edible to us). The spring blossom also provides an early source of nectar and pollen which attracts a whole range of insects. It can grow in any normal soil and prefers full sun.
