A deciduous tree which has light-green leaves that are similar to beech, only shorter, softer and slightly curved at the tips. Leaves turn golden-yellow to orange in autumn and mostly stay on throughout winter providing seasonal interest and screening. Hornbeam forms a compact, neat, shape and because of that is often used as a hedging plant. These pleached trees are grown on a frame, pruned to encourage a hedge shape to provide structure and privacy.
