Beech are large, semi-native trees that make excellent park and woodland trees, reaching up to 35m in height and spread and living for up to 400 years! Masses of lush, green leaves dominate the tree during spring and summer, then they turn to orange in autumn, before dropping. In unexposed sites leaves remain on the tree throughout winter and fall when new growth pushes through in spring. In autumn nut-like fruits called Beech Mast develop and are devoured by many wildlife species including deer, squirrels and birds. They tolerate most soil types and situations, except very wet.
