Magnolia 'Leonard Messel' is a fantastic variety of Magnolia for its striking dark-pink buds in early spring, on bare stems, that open out to lighter pink, star-shaped flowers with long petals. This is a large, shrubby tree growing up to 8m in height and 6m in width so requires plenty of space. Plant where the sun doesn't reach it till the afternoon (in winter) to avoid the sun burning the frosty buds, causing flower loss, in other words, plant south or west facing.
